FULL HD OR HD READY

When many people were still absorbing the concept of high definition, in this our country that has not even been released to emissions, the industry always eager to consumer electronics and intended to take the next step. Now, the keywords are Full HD or full high definition. Let us pause on the road to see what is all this high definition: it came from, where it goes, to serve and, above all, how to enjoy.

1080p has become the magic alphanumeric code in the world of televisions and projectors. Also called Full HD or True HD and translated full high-definition or high definition complete, it is a screen resolution that far exceeds the standard definition and high definition improves we knew so far. Let us see what exactly.

Although the term sounds like a recent high definition, the fact is that this is a project that began in the nineties with four clear objectives: to increase the resolution in display devices, improving frame rate (times per second that an image is played), advocate for the transition to widescreen format (16:9) and improve sound quality.

After some failures with analog technology, the energy recovery project in the digital age. As high definition are accepted two resolutions: 720p, 1080i, while in Europe the standard definition is 576i. But, what these numbers mean?

The resolution is given by the number of horizontal vertical lines a device or system is capable of playing and the way it does, ie, scanning lines interlaced mode ("i", the English "interlaced") or scanner so progressive ("p" of "progressive").

Interlaced or progressive

The interlaced scanning system divides each image into two parts. First play all odd vertical lines and then all pairs. The viewer is hardly aware of the artifice, and that recombines the two images in his brain. There is a certain sensation of flicker.

Taking the standard definition in Europe, the 576i, powered by a refresh rate of 50 frames per second, we find that 288 odd columns are created in 1 / 50 of a second, followed by the 288 pairs in the same period. Therefore, we obtain a complete picture at a frequency of 25 times per second. Progressive scan, in contrast, generates all vertical lines in consecutive order (1,2,3 ...). If we have the same refresh rate, the result is twice the definition, since the entire image will be created 50 times per second.

HD Ready

It is now time that is common to find the HD Ready logo (ready for high definition) in most TVs and projectors on the market. This is a European label which guarantees that a product meets the standards dictated by the EICTA (European Information & Communications Technology Industry Association) to be considered suitable for high definition.

HD Ready TV guarantees us the following: a resolution of at least 720 vertical lines, the acceptance of high definition input through an analog connection for component video and digital (DVI or HDMI) that supports HDCP, and that connections support video formats 720p and 1080i.

The difference between standard definition and high definition is overwhelming. However, a position in the debate about which of the two high definition standard is better, if the 720 progressively scanned lines or 1080 interlaced, involves entering the field of personal preference.

1080p

The new actor on the scene has been called Full HD, True HD or just 1080. It has become the workhorse of many large firms, with the promise of unprecedented high definition, aspire to conquer the market.

The full high definition involves panels with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels (more than two million picture elements) and the provision of progressive scan. In the Spanish market and both models can be found in LCD projectors, in addition to any Full HD plasma, with prices ranging from 2,500 euros to what is willing to pay, and above 6,000 euros.

However, remember that having a Full HD TV does not guarantee the promised enjoy full high definition, because as important as the display device is the image source.

What about HD?

It is true that the climbers make up the television image that are able to improve substantially any source, but to see a standard LCD TV Full HD quality is far from resounding.

Furthermore, it is unlikely that in the coming years we can enjoy 1080p broadcasts. What is not so far from reaching our country is in a high definition television say, "normal." In the United States and some European countries long ago enjoying HD broadcasts, usually in 1080i.

In Spain, however, emissions start by Internet, broadband, telephone, satellite and cable, but will not be for DVB-T (popularly known as DTT) at least until well after the digital switchover, scheduled for April 3 2010. At the moment the choices are high-definition players HD DVD and Blu-ray (incompatible formats will be in stores this Christmas, with several film titles available for each one) and game consoles: the Xbox, with the possibility of an external player HD DVD, and PS3, to integrate a Blu-ray and arrived in Europe in March hopefully.

HDMI 1.3

However, to enjoy the full HD will be necessary for high-definition device has, moreover, compatible with 1080p output. For this, the most suitable connector is the HDMI 1.3.

Although version 1.2 of HDMI can be sufficient for 1080, version 1.3 doubles the transfer rate of the connector making it more efficient for Full HD, also allowing high definition audio such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

In this sense, the PS3, the HD DVD player Toshiba HD-EX1, the high range, and Blu-ray players from various brands are - or will in the short term - the only options for enjoying full high definition.
